ABOUT TANYA GILL
Hello and welcome! I’m Tanya Gill, the founder of Dose of Therapy. I’m a South Asian therapist in Los Angeles, California.
I was born in a little village in Punjab, where I spent the first few years of my life before moving to a small rural town in California. As much as I admire the beauty and strengths of coming from a South Asian background, I can also acknowledge areas where we still need to put in the work, and that's mental health.
Growing up, I was always fascinated by the field of Psychology, but like many children of immigrants, I was encouraged to pursue something "more stable," like a career in medicine. Through my training in the hospital, I spent too much time talking to my patients and being curious about their stories and wounds deeper than the eyes could see. I wish I could describe the changes I saw in my patients when they were given 5-10 minutes of my uninterrupted time to listen to them. I made the switch to pursue a career in Clinical Psychology, and I truly believe this is my purpose.
In graduate school, I quickly realized there isn't enough research or "cultural competency" on people like me, which is where I hope to fill in the gaps. I have recognized that therapy is successful when you have a therapist who understands you AND knows how to help you. I specialize in working with adults and couples within the South Asian diaspora through relationship issues, anxiety/depression, and family conflicts. I understand how culture greatly influences our unique challenges and expectations. My approach involves exploring how your past experiences, relationships, and culture impact your current emotions and behaviors.
I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Clinical Supervisor, and Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology. I teach Couple & Family Therapy, Multicultural Counseling, and Clinical Practicum.
